Amazing Chinese Pyramids

Chinese pyramids are ancient mausoleums and burial mounds built to house the remains of several early emperors of China and their imperial relatives. About 38 of them are located around 25 kilometers (16 mi) – 35 kilometers (22 mi) north-west of Xi’an, on the Qin Chuan Plains in Shaanxi Province. The most famous is the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, northeast of Xi’an and 1.7 km west of where the Terracotta Warriors were found. Chinese pyramids were also built during the Han, Tang, Song, and Western Xia dynasties. They have flat tops, and thus are more similar in shape to the Teotihuacan pyramids north-east of Mexico City, Mexico than to the pyramids in Giza, Egypt. Although known in the West for at least a century, their existence has been made controversial by sensationalist publicity and the problems of Chinese archaeology in early 20th century.

Labyrinths and mazes can be found around the world and they are important cultural works, offering rich insights into our history and the human psyche. In Greek mythology, the labyrinth was designed by Daedalus to imprison the Minotaur; but the labyrinth serves a symbolic meaning, as well. “Walking the labyrinth” is said to be a deeply personal and revealing meditative experience by which a person gains insights into their true nature. Mazes, by contrast, are designed to be a strategic challenge; they are one of humankind’s original physical puzzle games.

Welcome to the hotel California, such a lovely place, such a lovely face, plenty of room at the hotel California. Any time of year, you can find it here. Everyone knows this song by The Eagles. But have you ever dreamed to visit the legendary Hotel California in reality? The Hotel California is located in Todos Santos, a town on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. It was founded by a Chinese immigrant in 1948. Since this was the only place in town where cold beer was served it soon became popular. That’s probably why The Eagles devoted their song to this place. The hotel’s complete renovation in 2002 transformed the original 16 rooms into 11 suites. Today this place is an icon that attracts many people. Check out this great photos of hotel California and enjoy.

Strange Decoration with Human Bones

There is a creepy crypt under a church in Rome that has two names, Our Lady of the Conception of the Capuchins and Santa Maria della Concezione. This church’s designer was Antonio Casoni. The bones were arranged along the walls, and the friars began to bury their own dead here, as well as the bodies of poor Romans, whose tomb was under the floor of the present Mass chapel. Here the Capuchins would come to pray and reflect each evening before retiring for the night. The crypt is decorated with skeletal remains that once belonged to 4,000 friars and were collected between 1528 and 1870. Now these human bones are arranged in ornaments. This Capuchin Crypt is a well-known ossuary that attracts tourists from all over the world. It has several rooms, and you can glance inside them after the jump.

The Crystal Cathedral is a Protestant Christian megachurch in the city of Garden Grove, in Orange County, California, United States. The main sanctuary building was constructed using over 10,000 rectangular panes of glass and can hold 2,900 worshipers. Construction on the Crystal Cathedral began in 1977 and ended in 1980. The initial estimated cost of the church was $6 million, but the final cost was over $17 million (about $55 million in 2007 dollars).

One of the World’s Largest Cruise Ships

Here’s a little photo-essay on Brilliance of the Seas cruising in Gulf waters. The ship contains 13 decks, 5 restaurants, a library, theater, art gallery, casino, pools, shops, sports courts and much more! In fact, this is a small floating city. It cruises the Mediterranean from April to November and the Panama Canal and Caribbean from November to April. Brilliance of the Seas is on active service from in January on Monday 18. What is unique about this particular cruise ship is that the pool and Jacuzzi are open 24/7. Take a look.

Hashima – The Ghost Island

This series of pictures shows a Hashima Island which is one of the Japanese uninhabited islands. The island was populated from 1887 to 1974 as a coal mining facility. After the mine was closed the island was abandoned. The first part of photos is from 1974 when it was still populated. And the second one shows the deserted island. Hashima is one among 505 uninhabited islands in the Nagasaki Prefecture about 15 kilometers from Nagasaki itself. The island was populated from 1887 to 1974 as a coal mining facility. The island’s most notable features are the abandoned concrete buildings and the sea wall surrounding it. It has been administered as part of Nagasaki city since 2005; it had previously been administered by the former town of Takashima. It also is known as the Ghost Island. It is known for its coal mines and their operation during the industrialization of Japan. Mitsubishi bought the island in 1890 and began the project, the aim of which was retrieving coal from undersea mines. They built Japan’s first large concrete building (9 stories high), a block of apartments in 1916 to accommodate their burgeoning ranks of workers (many of whom were forcibly recruited laborers from other parts of Asia) and to protect against typhoon destruction. According to a South Korean commission, the island housed 500 Koreans who were forced to work between 1939 and 1945, during World War II. In 1959, the 15-acre island’s population reached its peak of 5,259, with a population density was 835 people per hectare (83,500 people/km2) (216,264 people per square mile) for the whole island, or 1,391 per hectare (139,100 people/km2) for the residential district. As petroleum replaced coal in Japan in the 1960s, coal mines began shutting down all over the country, and Hashima’s mines were no exception. Mitsubishi officially announced the closing of the mine in 1974, and today it is empty and bare, which is why it is called Ghost Island. Travel to Hashima was re-opened on April 22, 2009 after more than 20 years of closure.

First Commercial Spaceship – VSS Enterprise

The VSS Enterprise is the first commercial spaceship being constructed for Virgin Galactic. It will also be the first ship of the SpaceShipTwo class, based on upscaling the design of SpaceShipOne. It was rolled out on December 7, 2009, with test flights beginning in late 2009 and commercial service starting in 2011, barring any problems in testing. The passenger-carrying commercial launches will initially occur at Virgin Galactic’s launch pad at Spaceport America, now under construction near Upham, New Mexico. The name is an acknowledgment to the USS Enterprise from the Star Trek television series.
Entrepreneur Richard Branson, head of the space tourism company Virgin Galactic, offered William Shatner, the actor who portrayed Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek series, a free ride into space on the inaugural space launch of the VSS Enterprise, with a retail value of $200,000. However, Shatner turned it down, and said, “I do want to go up but I need guarantees I’ll definitely come back.”

Fishing On The Fourth of July!

Getting out of bed early when you’re on vacation seems really stupid, unless you’re headed to the beach to fish. No matter how early I’ve gotten up, had a cup of coffee and a biscuit; by the time I’ve made it to a favorite fishing spot, there was someone already there! The exception to this is Fort Pickens State Park near Pensacola Beach, Florida where the beach is rarely overcrowded.

This was a beautiful Forth of July morning. My son, daughter and I had just driven over the two bridges from Pensacola and had turned down Ft. Pickens road. After we paid our toll for the day at the entrance gate we were free to fish where ever we wanted. It was going to be a day of fishing just like it was when the kids were still kids.

I’ve fished on the gulf side of the road at Fort Pickens for years, and most of the time went home with as many fish as I cared to clean. At the end of the strip where the rock jetties are, the fishing is always good. I prefer to fish on the Gulf side of the park though, where there are even fewer fishermen. This weekend there were more visitors to the beach than usual, but still, the beach area at Fort Pickens was not crowded at all!

On the way to the beach, we stopped at Grays’s Tackle and bought some frozen shrimp and a few more hooks and sinkers as well as out of state fishing license for my daughter and me. It isn’t good to start fishing then have a game warden spoil your day.

Upon arriving at the parking area, I threw my tackle box, bait bucket, ice chest and beach chairs onto my surf cart and we headed to the beach. We saw two other fishermen about 50 yards away, but other than them we had the place to ourselves!

We found a spot that looked good and settled in for the day. After setting the ice chest down and untangling the lines on my rods, I pried loose a few of the frozen shrimp, stuck them on the hooks and threw both sets of baits about thirty yards out into the gulf. I then sat down in my chair with the rods in their holders aimed at the sky, and poured myself a cup of coffee from the thermos I always carry.

I was thinking of looking for some sand fleas to use as bait, when one of my rods jerked, then bent halfway as if something was trying to take it on down to New Orleans. I dropped my coffee and grabbed the rod that was thrashing. I had a pretty good fish! Luckily I had the drag set correctly and after a few minutes of listening to the line peeling off the reel, I began retrieving and soon saw a flash of silver as I pulled the fish onto the shore. It was a good Pompano, one of the best eating fish on the entire Gulf Coast.

I looked around and saw that both my son and daughter had a fish on also. I tossed the fish into the ice chest as my other rod started jerking. It was another Pompano! We hadn’t been there for more than ten minutes and we had already caught four Pompano that were over two pounds apiece!

As all fishermen do after catching a good fish, they look around them to see if anyone else had witnessed such a fantastic event. Down the beach about 50 yards away, I saw the two fishermen I had spotted earlier. One of them had a fish on the line also. It appeared that a school of Pompano were running down the coast and had stumbled onto our baits!

After settling down and pouring myself another cup of coffee, I baited up again and threw my hooks out into the water. I waited anxiously for another jerk on my rods. An hour later I was still waiting. We had seen no further action from the other fishermen and we were all beginning to get impatient for another bite. We caught more fish later that morning, but the mad attacks on all our baits didn’t happen again.

It was a memorable holiday. We left the beach that morning with a cooler full of fish and a lot of memories of a special Fourth of July in the sun.
