Holes in A Living Cows

Hole-y Cow! These cows have been given a fistula, a hole directly into the stomach that scientists can reach into and study to see how certain foods get digested. Through this kind of work, better food can be concocted and studies into stomach cancer and other problems can be conducted. Although it looks inhumane, the cows don’t seem to mind. Animals can live a surprising amount of time with a permanent hole to their stomach, especially if it is a surgically made fistula. Nowadays, agricultural scientists learn about the digestive system of cattle by putting holes in cows – and the cows stay alive and well. These cows (fitted with a sealing cover called a “cannula”) each have a hole into their stomach. Through this hole one can extract food caught mid-stream through the digestive system. Take a look at this bizarre thing.

World’s Most Disgusting Food

We all love to see something weird, odd, and of course the bizarre sometimes. I think that everyone loves top ten lists, so here you have it lists of the wild, weird, and even sometimes the gross. As I was preparing to write this article today, I got a bit hungry and thought why not see what others eat. I typed in Weird Food and here is just a sampling of some of the foods that came up. These are the top ten on the grossness meter for us….

Tasty, Good and Expensive

It’s one of the few Israeli farms that produce natural black caviar. Caviar, sometimes called black caviar, is a luxury delicacy, consisting of processed, salted, non-fertilized sturgeon roe. The roe can be “fresh” (non-pasteurized) or pasteurized, the latter having much less culinary and economic value. Traditionally the designation caviar is only used for sturgeon roe from the wild sturgeon species living in the Caspian and Black Sea (Beluga, Ossetra and Sevruga caviar). These caviar varieties, according to their quality (based on flavor, size, consistency and color) can reach (February 2009) prices between € 6,000 and € 12,000 per kilo, and are associated with gourmet and Haute cuisine environments. Depending on specific national laws, the name caviar may also be used to describe the roe of other fish such as salmon, steel-head, trout, lump-fish, whitefish, and other species of sturgeon. The term is also used to describe dishes that are perceived to resemble caviar, such as “eggplant caviar” (made from eggplant / aubergine) and “Texas caviar” (made from black-eyed peas).

Underwater Feeding Of The White Tiger

Tigers are just big cats. Here are the photos of a white tiger catching and eating his meal under water. This is so interesting since this animal is even chewing underwater. This is called a true committing to the work. I am not sure if this animal could smell the meat, but surely never lost its way trough the water. Lot of underwater photos are taken, but this is something really unique. I hope you’ll like it as I did.

Story About Black Caviar

The caviar of the sturgeon is the most expensive. Currently, the dwindling fishing yields as a result of overfishing and pollution have resulted in the creation of less costly, though popular, caviar-quality roe alternatives from the whitefish and the North Atlantic salmon.
The harvest and sale of black caviar have been banned in Russia since August 1, 2007. The ban extends for 10 years, but scientific research and the artificial breeding of black caviar fish are exempted.
Commercial caviar production normally involves stunning the fish (usually by clubbing its head) and extracting the ovaries.
Nowadays most commercial fish farmers extract the caviar from the sturgeon surgically (compare Cesarean section) and then sew up the wound to keep sturgeon alive, allowing the females to continue producing more roe during their lives.
Nevertheless, other farmers are going even further, they are using a process called “stripping”, taking the caviar out of the fish without surgical intervention. This is the most humane approach towards fish that is present in our days, but not all farmers can do it due to the lack of knowledge in this field.
Given its high price in the West, caviar is associated with luxury and wealth. In Russia and other Eastern European cultures, though still expensive, caviar is commonly served at holiday feasts, weddings, and other festive occasions. Sturgeon-derived caviar is generally not eaten by Jews because sturgeon lack the scales mandated by the kosher diet. Sturgeon possess ganoid scales instead of the permitted ctenoid and cycloid scales. Although there is a discussion of its status within Halacha, since the scales will come off if soaked in lye; however, this does not apply to every roe-yielding fish species. In Islam generally all sea or river animals such as fish are lawful and halal which applies to the sturgeon as well as its caviar (depending on which school of practice), though in Twelver Shi’a Islam the creature has to have scales. In East Asia, “caviar” made from caplin roe may be found on sushi and is often very affordable. Salmon roe is called “ikura” in Japanese, a loan word from the Russian, “ikra” (caviar).
