Holes in A Living Cows

Hole-y Cow! These cows have been given a fistula, a hole directly into the stomach that scientists can reach into and study to see how certain foods get digested. Through this kind of work, better food can be concocted and studies into stomach cancer and other problems can be conducted. Although it looks inhumane, the cows don’t seem to mind. Animals can live a surprising amount of time with a permanent hole to their stomach, especially if it is a surgically made fistula. Nowadays, agricultural scientists learn about the digestive system of cattle by putting holes in cows – and the cows stay alive and well. These cows (fitted with a sealing cover called a “cannula”) each have a hole into their stomach. Through this hole one can extract food caught mid-stream through the digestive system. Stressed? Punch a Panda

A man named Nate Hill dresses up in a panda costume and stands on street corners giving people the free opportunity to let off some steam by throwing some punches at him. The service, dubbed Punch Me Panda, has been chronicled in a couple of photos by The Wall Street Journal. And if you want to book Punch Me Panda for a party, you can certainly do so. Ask Nate Hill for volume pricing… He is walking through Brooklyn streets and offering people to “kick the Panda for free”. It is some kind of therapy for people under stress.

The Friendliest Whale on Earth

These affectionate whales are almost certainly the most friendly in the world. The good-natured seafaring giants will swim right up to human visitors, who can dip their faces into the sea to plant a kiss on the heads of the huge 40-ton sea mammals. The whales love a pat on the head and a rub on their smooth- and sometimes barnacle covered 45 foot-long bodies. Their journey from the Bering Sea in the Arctic – a 20,000km round trip – makes it one of the longest migrations undertaken by any mammal. They set off down the Pacific coast in December and don’t eat again until they return to their northern feeding grounds some five months later. Nature photographer, conservationist and BBC presenter Mark Carwardine accompanies groups of adoring tourists travel from all over the world to play with the families of grey whales who live in their lagoon havens off the west coast of Mexico.

Jellyfish Invasion

Millions of jellyfish threaten to shut down Israeli power plant. As with recent extreme weather events and other aberrant incidents in the natural world, the rise in jellyfish invasions could be tied to climate change: as sea temperatures rise, the cold-blooded animals grow more quickly. Jellyfish that blocked the water supply to the power station in Hadera, Israel, are removed. Workers at a power plant in Hadera, Israel, are battling a sticky problem jellyfish could shut down a turbine plant and cause rolling blackouts in Israeli cities.

One Hell of a Snake

In Florida, people saw near their house a huge snake and called the police. Trappers were called later and they were horrified when they saw the monster. As it turned out later, it was a 7 feet 3 inches long giant Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake, now being called Rattzilla. Trappers didn’t have any other choice but to kill the snake. You can see the size of the monster after the jump.

When Cheetah Isn’t Hungry

They can even become friends for a short period of time. Since they don’t hunt during the day and the photo was taken at dusk the Cheetahs in this photo must have just eaten. The baby Antelope is safe this time. They are simply playing with the Antelope, much the same as a domestic cat plays with a toy. However, it is probably better not to think about what happens when the cats get hungry. The next time the prey and the predator meet there will likely be a different outcome.

“big cat” includes the four members of the genus Panthera: the tiger, lion, jaguar, and leopard. Members of this genus are the only cats able to roar. A more expansive definition of “big cat” also includes the cheetah, snow leopard, clouded leopard, and cougar. Despite enormous differences in size, the various species of cat are quite similar in both structure and behavior, with the exception of the cheetah, which is significantly different from any of the big or small cats. All cats are carnivores and efficient predators, in fact they are apex predators. Their range includes the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

The uterus (from Latin “uterus” (plural uteruses or uteri) or womb is a major female hormone-responsive reproductive sex organ of most mammals including humans. One end, the cervix, opens into the vagina, while the other is connected to one or both fallopian tubes, depending on the species. It is within the uterus that the fetus develops during gestation, usually developing completely in placental mammals such as humans and partially in marsupials such as kangaroos and opossums. Two uteruses usually form initially in a female fetus, and in placental mammals they may partially or completely fuse into a single uterus depending on the species. In many species with two uteruses, only one is functional. Humans and other higher primates such as chimpanzees, along with horses, usually have a single completely fused uterus, although in some individuals the uteruses may not have completely fused. The term uterus is used consistently within the medical and related professions, while the Germanic derived term womb is also common in everyday usage in the English language.

Super Ugly Cat

The most funny thing about this cat is that her name is actually “Ugly” She lives in one veterinarian ordination. “Ugly” have some very rare disorder and she has hair only under her neck. Everything else is completely bold. Even that she look unusual, she is very nice, and people that comes to veterinarian are always surprised with behavior and a look of this cat.

Workers in a Minefield

These rats sniff out landmines that are filled with TNT. They are trained by a Dutch nongovernmental organization in Tanzania. Whenever they make positive detection they are rewarded with some food. Once these rats are trained they will be able to clear a 200 square foot minefield in about an hour and a half. This is much faster than a human and so far they have helped to re-open over 2 million square miles of land in Mozambique.

Beautiful Golden Tabby Tiger

A golden tabby tiger is one with an extremely rare color variation caused by a recessive gene and is currently only found in captive tigers. Like the white tiger, it is a color form and not a separate species. In the case of the golden tiger, this is the wide band gene; while the white tiger is due to the color inhibitor (chinchilla) gene. There are currently believed to be fewer than 30 of these rare tigers in the world, but many more carriers of the gene. While no official name has been designated for the color, it is sometimes referred to as the strawberry tiger due to the strawberry blond coloration. The golden tiger’s white coat and gold patches make it stand out from the norm. Their striping is much paler than usual and may fade into spots or large prominent patches. Golden tigers also tend to be larger and, due to the effect of the gene on the hair shaft, have softer fur than their orange relatives. Like their white cousins, all golden tabby tigers have mainly Bengal parentage, but are genetically polluted with the genes of the Amur tiger via a part-Amur white tiger called Tony, who is a common ancestor of almost all white tigers in North America. The suggestion that this coloration is caused through the deliberate breeding of Amur tigers with Bengal tigers is a popular myth founded on this fact. All golden tigers appear traceable to one of Tony’s male descendants, Bhim.

Lampyridae is a family of insects in the beetle order Coleoptera. They are winged beetles, and commonly called fireflies or lightning bugs for their conspicuous crepuscular use of bioluminescence to attract mates or prey. Fireflies produce a “cold light”, with no infrared or ultraviolet frequencies. This chemically-produced light from the lower abdomen may be yellow, green, or pale red — wavelengths from 510 to 670 nanometers. There are 2,000 species of firefly found in temperate and tropical environments. Many are in marshes or in wet, wooded areas where their larvae have abundant sources of food. These larvae emit light and are often called “glowworms”, particularly in Eurasia. In the Americas, “glow worm” also refers to the related Phengodidae.
