Across the Universe

The usual definition of what a galaxy is: ‘An island universe’, or ‘A vast collection of stars’ is not wrong, but it is misleading. Because of the vast distances that separate stars even in the most densely packed regions of most galaxies, a better definition is: ‘A vast formation of plasma clouds that contain electrical currents and occasional, widely distributed tiny lumped points of matter called nebulae, stars and planets.’ The shape that characterizes most galaxies was first described by Hannes Alfven in 1981. Glass Beach in California

If you were to journey to the place we now know as Glass Beach in 1949, you would have discovered an unrestricted dump on an otherwise marvelous stretch of the ocean front. For some reason, California residents of Fort Bragg thought that the scenic viewpoint was the perfect place to dump all kinds of dangerous stuff
into the ocean from chemicals to abandoned cars to tons and tons of broken glass.

After 1949, the eighteen year-old unrestricted dump was suddenly restricted as, surprise surprise, people found out that it was dangerous but instead of cleaning up the godawful mess, the trash was left to fester and roll in the crashing surf.

Fortunately, mother nature is quite a bit smarter than us when it comes to handling garbage. Over the years, the pounding waves crashed and rolled the broken glass on the beach until eventually, the sharp edges were worn into billions of glass pebbles. People began to rediscover the beach which was now sparkling with rainbow hued sands. When the state of California noticed that people were visiting the site of the dump, they annexed the beach and made it part of MacKerricher State Park. The rusting hulks of old cars and appliances were hauled away and the miraculous testament to nature taking care of mankind’s failure is now a protected area that attracts thousands of visitors a year.

Incredible Starling Air Show

Gretna Green is a Scottish village famous for the bird “air shows”. During the annual migration to wintering in Scotland, European starlings fly (sturnus vulgaris), driven by the frost from their homes in Russia and Scandinavia. Soaring, flocks of these birds, like great black clouds in the sky, forming bizarre shapes. Each year European starlings migrate to wintering in Scotland. Flocks of these birds soar and form bizarre shapes in the sky as if they were dancing. Many come to witness their unusual twists in the air. Scientists are not sure exactly how and why starlings make these celestial dance. Even complex algorithmic models can not explain acrobatic sketches of starlings, which change their direction for the one hundredth milliseconds to avoid a collision, but at the same time and predation. The Friendliest Whale on Earth

These affectionate whales are almost certainly the most friendly in the world. The good-natured seafaring giants will swim right up to human visitors, who can dip their faces into the sea to plant a kiss on the heads of the huge 40-ton sea mammals. The whales love a pat on the head and a rub on their smooth- and sometimes barnacle covered 45 foot-long bodies. Their journey from the Bering Sea in the Arctic – a 20,000km round trip – makes it one of the longest migrations undertaken by any mammal. They set off down the Pacific coast in December and don’t eat again until they return to their northern feeding grounds some five months later. Nature photographer, conservationist and BBC presenter Mark Carwardine accompanies groups of adoring tourists travel from all over the world to play with the families of grey whales who live in their lagoon havens off the west coast of Mexico.

10. A baby grizzly bear weighs only 0.5 kg. When it grows up, it is about 550 kg. Grizzly bears are able to lift 0,8 times their body weight.

9. Ox is able to overpower the weight of 900 kg. It’s twice more than their own weight.

8. Elephants can raise up to 9 tons. It’s 1.7 times the weight of their body.

7. Tigers can lift the weight at twice their own (about 540 kg).

One Hell of a Snake

In Florida, people saw near their house a huge snake and called the police. Trappers were called later and they were horrified when they saw the monster. As it turned out later, it was a 7 feet 3 inches long giant Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake, now being called Rattzilla. Trappers didn’t have any other choice but to kill the snake. You can see the size of the monster after the jump.

When Cheetah Isn’t Hungry

They can even become friends for a short period of time. Since they don’t hunt during the day and the photo was taken at dusk the Cheetahs in this photo must have just eaten. The baby Antelope is safe this time. They are simply playing with the Antelope, much the same as a domestic cat plays with a toy. However, it is probably better not to think about what happens when the cats get hungry. The next time the prey and the predator meet there will likely be a different outcome.

These insects are called the Phasmatodea and there are plenty members of them: stick insects (in Europe), walking sticks or stick-bugs (in the US), ghost insects and leaf insects. The Phasmatodea (sometimes called Phasmida) are an order of insects, whose members are variously known as stick insects (in Europe and Australasia), walking sticks or stick-bugs (in the United States and Canada), phasmids, ghost insects and leaf insects (generally the family Phylliidae). The ordinal name is derived from the Ancient Greek phasma, meaning an apparition or phantom, and refers to the resemblance of many species to sticks or leaves. Their natural camouflage can make them extremely difficult to spot. I wouldn’t like someone makes a joke on me using one of these insects

“big cat” includes the four members of the genus Panthera: the tiger, lion, jaguar, and leopard. Members of this genus are the only cats able to roar. A more expansive definition of “big cat” also includes the cheetah, snow leopard, clouded leopard, and cougar. Despite enormous differences in size, the various species of cat are quite similar in both structure and behavior, with the exception of the cheetah, which is significantly different from any of the big or small cats. All cats are carnivores and efficient predators, in fact they are apex predators. Their range includes the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

The uterus (from Latin “uterus” (plural uteruses or uteri) or womb is a major female hormone-responsive reproductive sex organ of most mammals including humans. One end, the cervix, opens into the vagina, while the other is connected to one or both fallopian tubes, depending on the species. It is within the uterus that the fetus develops during gestation, usually developing completely in placental mammals such as humans and partially in marsupials such as kangaroos and opossums. Two uteruses usually form initially in a female fetus, and in placental mammals they may partially or completely fuse into a single uterus depending on the species. In many species with two uteruses, only one is functional. Humans and other higher primates such as chimpanzees, along with horses, usually have a single completely fused uterus, although in some individuals the uteruses may not have completely fused. The term uterus is used consistently within the medical and related professions, while the Germanic derived term womb is also common in everyday usage in the English language.

Strange Appearing in Norwegian Sky

Thousands of people witnessed this mysterious spiral in the sky last night in Norway. It was actually spinning. Some people think it’s an UFO, other say it’s a Stargate. Obviously it’s not the Northern Light. My guess was that it’s an experiment by American scientists at the HAARP base. Ten days ago a CERN worker wrote this: The best regards to american scientist who have begun testing Aurora project. But don’t overroast a planet, colleague I hope they won’t. Now it’s almost confirmed that it was the fail launch of new Russian Bulava rocket.

The Mysterious Sailing Stones of Death Valley

The sailing stones (sliding rocks, moving rocks) are a geological phenomenon where rocks move in long tracks along a smooth valley floor without human or animal intervention. They have been recorded and studied in a number of places around Racetrack Playa, Death Valley, where the number and length of travel grooves are notable. The force behind their movement is not understood and is subject to research.

Transparent Headed Fish

Macropinna microstoma is the only species of fish in the genus Macropinna, belonging to Opisthoproctidae, the barreleye family. It is recognized for a highly unusual transparent, fluid-filled dome on its head, through which the lenses of its eyes can be seen.The eyes have a barrel shape and can be rotated to point either forward or straight up, looking through the fish’s transparent dome. M. microstoma has a tiny mouth and most of its body is covered with large scales. The fish normally hangs nearly motionless in the water, at 0a depth of about 600 metres (2,000 ft) to 800 metres (2,600 ft), using its large fins for stability and with its eyes directed upward. In the low light conditions it is assumed the fish detects prey by its silhouette. MBARI researchers Bruce Robison and Kim Reisenbichler observed that when prey such as small fish and jellyfish are spotted, the eyes rotate like binoculars, facing forward as it turns its body from a horizontal to a vertical position to feed. Robison speculates that M. microstoma steals food from siphonophores.
M. microstoma has been known to science since 1939, by Chapman, but is not known to have been photographed alive until 2004. Old drawings do not show the transparent dome, as it is usually destroyed when brought up from the depths.

Little Elephant’s Story

One upon a time there lived a little elephant in the far, far away jungle. But this little elephant was not a good boy, and he was never listening to what his mother was telling to him. She was always saying : ” Be careful where you are going and don’t wonder around, because jungle is not the safest place to be!”, but he didn’t care a lot about what his mother’s talking. And, than one day he went to the river and the crocodile caught him. Little elephant tried to run away, but it was to late, the elephant already got him. He started to yell, and good thing was that his mother and father heard…not only they heard the little elephant’s screaming all the family did, so they all run to the rescue, and saved little elephant. From that day, this little elephant never was a bad bay and listened to his mother and became fine and big elephant! Always listen to your mothers!

Beautiful Golden Tabby Tiger

A golden tabby tiger is one with an extremely rare color variation caused by a recessive gene and is currently only found in captive tigers. Like the white tiger, it is a color form and not a separate species. In the case of the golden tiger, this is the wide band gene; while the white tiger is due to the color inhibitor (chinchilla) gene. There are currently believed to be fewer than 30 of these rare tigers in the world, but many more carriers of the gene. While no official name has been designated for the color, it is sometimes referred to as the strawberry tiger due to the strawberry blond coloration. The golden tiger’s white coat and gold patches make it stand out from the norm. Their striping is much paler than usual and may fade into spots or large prominent patches. Golden tigers also tend to be larger and, due to the effect of the gene on the hair shaft, have softer fur than their orange relatives. Like their white cousins, all golden tabby tigers have mainly Bengal parentage, but are genetically polluted with the genes of the Amur tiger via a part-Amur white tiger called Tony, who is a common ancestor of almost all white tigers in North America. The suggestion that this coloration is caused through the deliberate breeding of Amur tigers with Bengal tigers is a popular myth founded on this fact. All golden tigers appear traceable to one of Tony’s male descendants, Bhim.

Plastic Bottle Island

Spiral Island is a name given to two floating artificial islands built by British eco-pioneer Richart “Rishi” Sowa. Sowa is a musician, artist, and carpenter. As an environmentalist, he believes in recycling and low-impact living. A book about Sowa’s journey in building the original island and his philosophies, Spiralogically Speaking, written by the German author Tanja Samed with Sowa, is due to be released in 2008. Spiral Island has been featured in a number of newspapers and TV documentaries around the world, including in Japan and South Korea, and was seen in an episode of the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! television program.
